About the Registry - PDF

In Hong Kong, colon cancer has increased rapidly in recent years to become the
second commonest cancer with more than 3,500 new patients diagnosed in the year
2002. According to international literature, around 10% of these patients are
genetically predisposed to develop colon cancer due to defects in their genes.

The two main types of hereditary colon cancers are Familial Adenomatous Polyposis
(FAP) and Hereditary
Non-Polyposis Colorectal Cancer (HNPCC) syndromes. They are caused by
germline mutation of the Adenomatous Polyposis Coli (APC) and Mismatch Repair
(MMR) genes respectively. Members of these families will have 50% chance of
carrying the disease gene and will be equally predisposed to colon cancer and other
associated cancers such as stomach, duodenum, female organ and urinary tract.
Moreover, they tend to develop these cancers earlier in their life. The psychological
and economic burdens on these families are profound.

The Hereditary Gastrointestinal Cancer Registry is based in Hong Kong at Queen
Mary Hospital specifically for Hong Kong residents and their families, who are
proven or suspected to have hereditary colorectal cancer. We can be contacted at
(852) 2855 4911 or by fax (852) 2872 8425.
