Coming Events for 2005

In the forthcoming year, the Registry will continue its scope of activities in the following areas:

Educational activities for the Registry Members

We plan to organize health talks and stress reduction workshops for our Registry members. These activities will serve to educate our members and help them to deal with their stress.

Educational activities for the public

We shall continue with our commitment in raising awareness and educating the public on issues regarding hereditary colorectal cancer as well as colorectal cancer in general. In the coming year, we aim to disseminate useful information to the public so that people can avoid environmental risk factors in their everyday life. We hope that, with these efforts, the overall incidence of colorectal cancer will be decreased in the future years to come.

Educational activities for the medical profession

We shall continue our work in delivering lectures and papers in both local and overseas meetings organized by various scientific and medical societies. Through these presentations, we can disseminate result of our research work and to increase the medical profession’s awareness on hereditary colorectal cancer and large bowel cancer in general.

Genetic study

As in the past, the genetic diagnostic laboratory will continue to contribute useful scientific data towards hereditary colorectal cancer and colorectal cancer in general to the global scientific community. As highlighted above, we have recently identified an old founder mutation in the southern Chinese. These data have important implications for Chinese communities world-wide. In fact, we have gathered some more important data, which we shall present at international conferences in 2005.

Psychosocial study

The group on psychosocial research has been making steady progress in its various studies and will continue to do so in the year to come. In 2005, the group will extend its collaboration with Dr. Lee Wai Yung at the Family Institute of The University of Hong Kong to conduct psychological intervention research programme for Chinese hereditary colorectal cancer families in Hong Kong. To the best of our knowledge, our intervention programme will be unique in the medical field. We look forward to successful conduct of the programme in the coming few years.
