Education and Training
The Registry aims to educate both the medical profession and the general public about hereditary colorectal cancer to ensure proper referral and adherence to screening programme. The Registry also aims to educate the public and our client for better life style to achieve colorectal cancer prevention.

Summary of Education Activities in 2002
1. The 1st meeting for families with colorectal cancer clustering was held on 23 March 2002 at 3:00 pm at K2 Doctors’ Common Room. A total of 26 clients and their family members attended this meeting. Drs Judy Ho and ST Yuen delivered talks on familial colorectal cancer. A Q&A session was arranged for the attendees after the talks. The attendees were recommended to pass the messages to their other family members, who could not attend this meeting. Pamphlets on colon cancer and hereditary cancer, guidelines of diet for cancer patients, healthy diet relating to prevention of colon cancer were also distributed at the meeting.
2. A talk titled "Introduction of Hereditary Colon Cancer" was delivered by Dr Judy Ho at the Hong Kong Cancer Link on 11 May 2002. More than 50 colon cancer patients and their relatives attended.
3. Drs. ST Yuen and SY Leung were invited to give a talk titled "Colorectal Cancer – Genetic Diagnosis and Screening" in June 2002 at the “Inaugural Symposium: 21st Century Health Care in Hong Kong: A New Era” at the University of Hong Kong. Over 500 participants, predominantly medical practitioners, attended this symposium. This served as a good opportunity to educate and disseminate information of the Registry to the practicing doctors in Hong Kong.
4. Drs. ST Yuen, Judy Ho co-authored the important paper titled "Mutation of the BRAF gene in human cancer", which appeared in the June 2002 issue of Nature. This is a very important paper with the identification of a new and important oncogene BRAF, which may open up new therapeutic targets for treatment of cancer including colorectal cancer.
5. Dr. Judy Ho was interviewed by the HK Economics Times in November 2002. Topics discussed were about FAP, HNPCC and their genetic diagnosis in Hong Kong. The article was published on 29 November 2002.
6. Dr. Judy Ho was interviewed by Ming Pao Daily in December 2002. Topics discussed were about the psychological impact of genetic diagnosis in hereditary colorectal cancer family. The article was published on 15 January 2003.
7. Dr. ST Yuen was invited to deliver a talk titled "Molecular genetics of colorectal cancer" at the 18th World Congress of Digestive Surgery & 9th Hong Kong International Cancer Congress on 8 – 11 December 2002.
8. Dr. Judy Ho was invited to organize a symposium titled "Queen Mary Hospital’s genetic screening service" at the 18th World Congress of Digestive Surgery & 9th Hong Kong International Cancer Congress on 8 – 11 December 2002. She delivered a talk titled "The Hereditary Gastrointestinal Cancer Registry of Queen Mary Hospital". In the symposium, Prof. Cecilia Chan and Dr. S. Ho presented our preliminary data regarding the psychosocial stress of our clients in facing hereditary colorectal cancer and genetic diagnosis.
